Cala Mariolu

Ogliastra – Baunei

The beach Ispuligidenie (the name in dialect of Baunei  means “snow fleas”), or Cala Mariolu opens into the Gulf of Orosei, in the area called Ogliastra, in Punta Ispuligi. The name is related to Mediterranean monk seal(Monachus monachus), nicknamed by fishermen “mariolu” (thief) because it took the fish from the nets. The waters are clear and the beach is made up of a mixture of sand and  round white and pink pebbles. The beach, which is dominated by a limestone escarpment covered by Mediterranean vegetation, is characterized by shallow waters that are safe for children to play. It is always very busy for the enchanting beauty of the natural scenery and backdrops. It can be reached through a trekking route or by boat or raft (there are many proposals for mini-cruises, departing from ports of Arbatax, Santa Maria Navarrese and Cala Gonone, reaching beaches and isolated coves, allowing large numbers of tourists, to visit them and take an unforgettable bath in their waters, among them it is also Cala Mariolu). The area is full of caves, one of which opens directly onto the bay, while nearby is the Grotta del Fico, that can be reached with one of the ships departing from S. Maria Navarrese. At the beach, during the summer season, there is a kiosk where you can also rent beach umbrellas and snorkeling equipment, and a small diving center. The entrance to the beach costs € 1.00.

Trekking route:

We start with our car from the village of Baunei, following a steep paved road that climbs the ridge that leads us and after some tight curves, the plateau of Golgo. From here we continue for about ten kilometers, up to an intersection where you can see the road signs that point the way to “su Sterru”, and Cala Sisine, which is precisely the path that we follow. Before going any further, however, we recommend that you equip yourself with hiking boots and detailed maps or contact one of the operators that organize tours (you can also visit the website visitbaunei.it to get detailed directions).
