A pearl of the East Coast

The territory of Tortolì is one of the most famous on the East Coast of Sardinia, located in the heart of Ogliastra in a vast plain leading down to the sea, full of citrus groves, it is characterized by the spectacular beauty of the coastline with the striking cliffs of red porphyry and the several white beaches, among the most beautiful of Sardinia. Not to be missed, for the fineness of the sand and the crystal clear waters, the beaches of the  Lido di Orrì and Porto Frailis.

The Beach “Lido di Orrì” is considered one of the most beautiful and clean beaches of Sardinia; it is very long (about 16 kilometres) and wide, with a shallow  water up to about 300m from the shore, crystal clear and of a pale blue colour, which is well suited to holidays of families with children. Being a windy coast, it is also an excellent destination for surfers. There are many facilities, with ample parking also for RVs, bars, refreshment stands, nightlife venues. The same can be said for the “Porto Frailis” beach, a cove with fine white sand and crystal clear waters, bounded by cliffs and also characterized by shallow waters. Ideal place for holidays with children, it is also full of facilities (parking, bars, refreshment stands) and has a lively nightlife.

Interest for this territory is given both by the numerous historical and artistic treasures and by the natural wonders that characterize, as we said above, particularly its coastline. Among the many historical sites there are the nuragic area of “S’Ortali” and “Su Monti” in the plain behind the beach of Orrì, and the coastal towers, builted during the process of coastal fortification implemented in the sixteenth century to protect the town from Moorish invasions. They bear witness to this piece of history, the St Michael’s Tower(XVI century) and the San Gemiliano Tower(XVI-XVII centuries).

Tortolì is also known for its food and wine tradition that is based on a simple cooking due to its agro-pastoral origins, in which the ingredients are used in such a wise way as to make the food absolutely delicious. Even today, some dishes like the traditional culurgionis (see post), whose recipes have been passed down from generation to generation, are considered almost a ritual; is also excellent the famous “Bottarga dell’Ogliastra“(mullet roe, see post) that is obtained from the grey mullets present in the pond of Tortolì.

Typical dishes with strong tastes, which match well the exceptional wines produced in the area, especially from grapes Cannonau (see post), and which are at the center of numerous local food festivals, events not to be missed for lovers of Sardinia and its flavors!
