City of Wine
Jerzu is an ancient agricultural village of Ogliastra(in the territory of the province of Nuoro) inhabited since prehistoric times, located at 5oo meters above sea level and it is surrounded by “i tacchi“(heels, characteristic rocky massifs, limestone plateaus) of “Porcu’e“, “Ludu” and “Troiscu“. Being rich of steep walls this is an area for climbing, but it is also possible to trek along fascinating paths surrounded by unspoiled nature, rich in oaks, maple, myrtle trees(see post) and brooms. The history of this country is closely related to viticulture and to the wine trade, in particular the Cannonau (see post). In fact Jerzu, known as the “City of Wine” is famous for its many vineyards that surround it and which produce annually 100,000 tons of grapes, which is then processed to obtain just the wine Cannonau DOC Rosso, that made famous also the “Cantina Sociale di Jerzu“(a wine producers cooperative), which is definitely worth a visit.
You also have other reasons to visit Jerzu: the land that surrounds it is rich in sites of great archaeological interest such as Domus de Janas and nuragic villages (on Mount Corongiu there are about 30 nuraghis, see other post) and in addition to these, there is also a Punic necropolis(see other post). Once you get to Jerzu, you also have to taste the local specialty, delicacies such as “su pani conciu“, bread cooked in wine, always paired with a good glass of Cannonau!
