The rocky heart of Sardinia
The big massif of Gennargentu (Silver Gate), which hosts the highest peaks of the island, Punta La Marmora (1834 m) and Bruncu Spina (1828m), is a wild and beautiful environment, a vast and unspoiled territory located in the central east of Sardinia, in the province of Nuoro and Ogliastra. You can walk for hours or even days without meeting a soul; it seems that you are not even in Italy (and even in Europe), because this area is still as it was hundreds of years ago! From Orgosolo through the enchanting Foresta Montes, one of the most beautiful forests of the island with oak and trees of secular junipers, you reach Monte Novo San Giovanni, an area of great value because nature here is truly unspoilt and is possible to find many species, even rare, of wildlife. Here indeed is possible to see the golden eagle or groups of mouflons and along a staircase you can arrive at the top of the mountain: viewed from here the Supramonte(see post) and Ogliastra(see post) are a spectacular sight, and you can enjoy a view that sweeps over the whole island! There deep gorges and canyons, and the vegetation consists of mediterranean scrub and meadows, monumental oaks, holms, yews, chestnut trees, hazelnut trees, dwarf junipers, thyme, helichrysum, santolina and those who walk along the many paths may find fresh springs, admire spectacular flowers of rare beauty and many different insects. In the valley you can find sheepfolds still in use, the Cuiles (sheepfolds), old dwelling of who in those mountains has worked hard for many years between goats and pigs, as well as the Pinnettos, huts reminiscent of the old nuragic huts. In the villages you can visit museums, see and buy handicrafts, and taste typical local products, including those cooked by shepherds, such as boiled meats, roasts, local cheese production (see post), pane carasau (see post 1 & 2), wine Cannonau (see post).
And for those who want to hike are available many trails of great natural interest, historical and anthropological. There are several rest stops and refuges as well, contrary to what is thought by those who believe that in Sardinia you can just go to the beach, the ski slopes! Yes that’s right, this wonderful area is also a popular winter destination for skiers.
As usual, we say goodbye to you with a … Do not miss it !!!
