Supramonte

The Wild Sardinia

The Supramonte is an area of mountains and highlands located in central-eastern Sardinia, with an area of about 35,000 hectares, made up of carbonate highlands and sinkholes that includes also the extended coastline of the Gulf of Orosei (see post 1, 2, 3) up to Cala Luna(see post), with numerous caves, including the famous Grotta del Bue Marino, known in the past for the presence of the monk seal. A vast area that is part of the municipalities of Orgosolo, Urzulei, Dorgali(see post), Baunei(see post 1 & 2) and Oliena. Going through this territory you can perceive its wild and pristine nature, you will encounter deep ravines, gorges and spectacular limestone “tacchi“(heels, see post 1 & 2). Along the eastern side, for example, following the course of Rio Flumineddu, you find yourself in a canyon 22 km long, in the final part of which there’s the origin of the Gorropu(see post), one of the largest canyons in Europe, close and deep (has walls up to 400m) which divides Barbagia from Ogliastra, while in Supramonte of Baunei we find the Golgo, that with its 300 meters is the deepest abyss in Europe. The pristine natural  habitat of this area, the large wooded area with spectacular examples of juniper and vast forests of holm and the variety of plants typical of the mediterranean scrub, have made this territory an ideal environment for wild sheep, pine martens and sardinian red deers. If you love to go hiking in a true paradise on earth there is also a large range of paths, in addition to archaeological sites of great interest: in the only area of Dorgali the numerous nuragic clans  have left visible traces of no less than 78 villages, 46 nuraghis, 14 dolmens, 40 tombs of the giants (see post), 17 holy wells (see post) and 3 megalithic protective walls, with the village of Serra Orrios that had about 70 circular huts. In Supramonte of Oliena then there’s the extraordinary village of Tiscali, entirely built inside a gigantic cave.
